Where's Winter?
January 7, 2007
I. Stutzman
Temperatures in the 50's and 60's are not typical for the Mountain Lake Park area and Western Maryland in the middle of January. Lately, we have seen people in shorts and t-shirts roaming our town walking the dog or just getting some exercise. In fact it has not snowed since just after the Christmas holiday. Many have enjoyed the weather getting out for a winter round of golf or some other activity that is usually reserved for the summer or spring seasons. So where are the chilling temperatures and mounds of snow that we find all too common during the winter months in our region?
Don't get too excited yet thinking that this weather pattern is going to stick around forever. The forcast calls for some snow for the begining of next week. For those who love the winter season this will be a welcome refresher to what winters in Garrett County are typically like. A fresh accumulation is likely in our backyards and on the ski slopes in the surrounding area. Ski resorts have been desperate for this type of precipitation since they have not been able to fire up the snow guns because of unseasonably warm temperatures. So don't forget to take that last walk outside today before the winds begin to howl and the snow begins to fall. let's not fail to remember that this is what the weather is suppose to be like at this time of year and this is the reason that many of us fell in love with the area.
